JNPT Cargo Guidelines & Container Compliance
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), located in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, is India's premier container handling port. Nature Aspire works closely with exporters and custom house agents to supply fully compliant containers that adhere to JNPT terminal standards and international maritime customs mandates.
Critical Mandate: Valid CSC Plates
Under the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC), all loaded shipping containers entering JNPT gate terminals must carry a valid, legible metal CSC plate. Gate-in systems will reject units with expired, missing, or corroded CSC plates, causing heavy vessel-miss roll charges.
1. JNPT Weight & Dimensions Regulations
Loaded container trucks entering the port must strictly match declared weight parameters under the SOLAS Verified Gross Mass (VGM) rules:
- 20ft Standard Containers: Maximum gross weight must not exceed 30,480 kg (including tare weight of ~2,180 kg).
- 40ft Dry & High Cube Containers: Maximum gross weight must not exceed 32,500 kg (including tare weight of ~3,900 kg).
- Overweight Penalties: JNPT weighbridges enforce automated axle weight checks. Overloaded trucks are refused gates and penalized under NHAI road mandates.
2. Reefer Container Regulations at Gate-In
Cold chain exports (seafood, grapes, pharmaceuticals) via GTI or NSICT terminals must comply with strict temperature guidelines:
- Mock Runs (PTI): A Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) report certified within 24 hours of gate-in must accompany the container.
- Temp Spikes: If the temperature spikes beyond +/- 2°C of the cargo setpoint during road transit from the cold store to the JNPT terminal, the unit will be held at gate-in.
- Plug-in Points: Exporters must ensure terminal plug-in charges are pre-paid so that reefer grids are connected immediately upon gate-in to prevent spoilage.
3. Cargo Worthy (CW) Seal Audits
Exporters must verify container physical integrity prior to loading at Navi Mumbai depots:
- Hole Audits: Containers must be light-leak checked. Even pinhole light penetration will result in rejection due to risk of rain water entry.
- Gasket Tightness: Door gaskets must seal completely to prevent ocean moisture entry.
- Locking Bars: Door locking cams must align perfectly to fit the High-Security Bolt Seal (RFID Seal) mandated by Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).
